The Mitchell Christian boys’ basketball team trailed early and was never able to comeback as it lost 65-42 to Bridgewater-Emery on Tuesday at Mitchell Christian School.

“We came out a little flat,” MCHS head coach Dennis Martin said. “They attacked us where we didn’t expect and got us in a hole early that was tough to get out of.”

Bridgewater-Emery led 12-7 after the first quarter and outscored the Eagles 26-8 in the second to put the halftime score at 38-15.

“They took some things away from us and played really good defense,” Martin said.

Mitchell Christian battled back in the third quarter, putting up 21 points to cut the Huskies’ lead down to 15.

“I was proud of how we fought and tried to keep the game close,” Martin said.

Bridgewater-Emery just proved to be too much as it stretched the lead in the fourth quarter and finished the game 65-42.

Mitchell Christian was led by Wes Vander Pol with 16 points. He also came down with 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Cody Perman was the only other Eagle in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

Bridgewater-Emery was led by Clayton Dye, who had 24 points. Seth Wethor and Jacob Schweitzer each had 15 points on the night.

The Huskies improved to 13-5 on the season and travel to Irene on Thursday to take on Irene-Wakonda.

The loss drops Mitchell Christian to 4-15 as it travels to Wessington Springs on Monday for its final game before districts.

“They’ve got a good team but we feel ready for them,” Martin said. “Hopefully we can win and get some momentum going into districts.”
