WASHINGTON — Wednesday, Janelle Jessen, of Higmore, will be one of 11 leaders honored at the White House as Champions of Change for creating jobs in their communities and using innovative techniques to develop valuable projects helping to improve America’s infrastructure.

Jessen is the accounting and office manager for Venture Communications Cooperative in Highmore.

After receiving a $5.2 million investment from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to implement a fiber-to-the-premise project in an under-served area of South Dakota, Jessen’s work ensured 865 rural subscribers have new and improved broadband Internet service.

The Champions of Change program was created as a part of President Barack Obama’s Winning the Future initiative. Each week, a different sector is highlighted and groups of champions, ranging from educators to entrepreneurs to community leaders, are recognized for the work they are doing to strengthen their communities.
