PIERRE (AP) — A proposed home in Pierre for male recovering alcoholics is running into opposition from its neighbors.
Shauna Thompson says almost 80 homeowners who live near the proposed Sussex Place Sober Living Home have signed petitions opposing the project.
They're presenting the petitions to the Pierre City Commission on Tuesday.
A counseling service bought the home. It's intended for use as living space for five adult male recovering alcoholics who have been sober for at least 30 straight days.
Counseling service board member Mark Swendsen tells the media the home will allow the men to share expenses and support each other.
He says he thinks opposition to the project will wither once the first group of men moves in and neighbors get used to their presence.
