PIERRE (AP) — An amended bill on certifying public and private post-secondary schools in South Dakota will move forward from the Senate to the House.
Senators voted Monday on the bill that creates a method for the Secretary of State to certify which schools are authorized to operate in South Dakota through a process enforced by the federal government. Schools must also provide a complaint process for students that will be administered by the attorney general's consumer protection office.
The legislation is in response to a federal mandate passed last year requiring states to certify all public and private post-secondary schools whose students receive federal student loans. Students attending uncertified schools would become ineligible for federal loans.
The Senate voted 28-6, passing it along to the House.
