ALEXANDRIA — Wes Vander Pol’s 12 points weren’t quite enough for Mitchell Christian, which lost 39-35 to Hanson on Thursday night in a boys’ high school basketball game.
Mitchell Christian’s record dropped to 4-14, while Hanson improved to 12-5 on the year.
The Eagles led 20-18 at half, but were unable to hold on to beat the Beavers.
“I was really happy with how the kids played,” Eagles head coach Dennis Martin said. “We came out with a lot of energy on the defensive end.”
Martin was pleased with the patience that his team showed early in the game, setting up easy looks better than they have in the past.
The difference in the game came from the free-throw line. Hanson connected on 9 of 13 shots from the line, while Mitchell Christian was just 1-of-2.
“We need to learn how to get to the free-throw line,” Martin said. “It’s hard to win a basketball game with one trip to the line in 32 minutes.”
Vander Pol was the only Eagles player who scored in double-digits. Jacob Frey came up just shy with nine points to go along with his game-high seven rebounds.
Hanson was led by Jordan Marquardt, who finished with 14 points on the night. Reid Smith added 12 for the Beavers, who host Parker (9-8) on Monday.
Mitchell Christian has another tough game coming up as it hosts Bridgewater-Emery (12-5) on Tuesday at Mitchell Christian School.
“It’s going to be a tough game. Our kids are going to have to come ready to play,” Martin said.
