VERMILLION — Louie Krogman scored 22 points to lead South Dakota past South Dakota State University 72-68 Thursday night in a Summit League basketball game.

The win brings the Coyotes record to 9-14 and 4-10 in Summit League play, while SDSU dropped to 19-7 and 11-3 in the Summit League.

It was the second time the two teams played this year in the renewal of the long-time rivalry. Earlier this year, SDSU defeated the Coyotes 86-56 at Frost Arena in Brookings.

“We came in focused on what we needed to do,” USD head coach Dave Boots said after the game according to a USD release. “I’m really proud of our guys. We played well. We were good defensively and we rebounded the ball very well.”

Charlie Westbrook had 18 points for USD, which shot 55 percent from the field and led 34-24 at halftime. The Coyotes had a 40-35 edge in rebounding.

The Coyotes led by as much as 21 in the game, but the Jacks continued to fight and with 1:51 left in the game had cut the lead down to just three with the score 68-65.

USD responded, as senior Ricardo Andreotti got a dunk to put the Coyotes back up five, 70-65.

The Jacks got within two points with 23 seconds left in the contest, but were unable to finish the comeback.

SDSU was led by Nate Wolters, who had a game-high 27 points. Chad White had 17 points, but no other Jackrabbit scorer had more than nine.

SDSU shot 35.8 percent from the field and 31.3 percent on 3-point shots.

The Jacks hit 10 3-pointers in the second half to close the gap. They were 0-of-8 from behind the arc in the first half.

“We were really bad defensively, they were really good offensively and they came in with the same game plan that Southern Utah had in terms of slowing it down,” head coach Scott Nagy said after the game according to an SDSU press release. “But that’s not what affected the game. They were just much more prepared and had much more energy.”

The Coyotes host North Dakota State on Saturday at the DakotaDome, while SDSU takes on UMKC on Saturday in Kansas City, Mo.
