Area high school basketball roundup: Kimball/White Lake tops Dakota Christian

NEW HOLLAND — Kimball/White Lake came back from an eight-point deficit at the end of the third quarter to defeat Dakota Christian 54-52 in a boys’ basketball game Thursday.

NEW HOLLAND — Kimball/White Lake came back from an eight-point deficit at the end of the third quarter to defeat Dakota Christian 54-52 in a boys’ basketball game Thursday.

Jesse Taylor had a double-double for the WiLdKats with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Taylor also had six steals. Jacob Kirsch scored 17 points and had five steals.

Kimball/White Lake shot 21-of-56 from the field and 11-of-17 from the free-throw line. The WiLdKats grabbed 34 rebounds as a team and committed 10 turnovers.

Michael Buitenbos scored 27 points and had four assists for the Cadets. Jake Spoelstra scored 13 points and had eight rebounds.

Dakota Christian shot 21-of-41 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line. The Cadets grabbed 23 total rebounds and had 20 turnovers.

Kimball/White Lake (11-4) hosts Wessington Springs Tuesday in White Lake. Dakota Christian (6-10) plays at James Valley Christian today.

Kimball/White Lake won the junior varsity game 34-31.

Canistota 62, Menno 20

MENNO — Canistota kept Menno from scoring in the fourth quarter to defeat the Wolves 62-20 Thursday.

Jason Van Winkle scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Cody Bunger scored 15 points. Alex Robertson had 11 assists and six steals.

The Hawks made 28-of-59 field goal attempts and 8-of-10 free throw attempts. Canistota grabbed 31 rebounds as a team and had six turnovers.

Ben Fischer was the leading scorer for Menno with seven points. The Wolves made 8-of-30 field goal attempts and 1-of-2 free throw attempts. Menno grabbed 16 rebounds as a team and committed 19 turnovers.

Canistota (14-2) plays Rosholt Saturday in the DWU Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Menno (6-12) hosts Viborg/Hurley Tuesday.

Canistota won the junior varsity game with a final score 39-26.

FREEMAN — Ryan Hongslo had a double-double to lead Corsica/Stickney over Freeman 55-50 Thursday.

Hongslo scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Aaron Groeneweg scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds and had three assists.

Corsica/Stickney shot 20-of-43 from the field and 11-of-11 from the free-throw line. The team had 32 total rebounds and 19 turnovers.

Jordan Rinehart was the top player for the Flyers with 12 points and eight rebounds. Cole Paulson scored 10 points. Caleb Long grabbed six rebounds. Shaun Becker had six assists and three blocks.

Freeman shot 20-of-53 from the field and 6-of-17 from the free-throw line. The Flyers had 24 rebounds as a team and five turnovers.

Corsica/Stickney won the junior varsity game 34-24.

Corsica/Stickney (11-5) plays Tripp-Delmont/Armour Tuesday in Armour. Freeman (9-8) plays Irene-Wakonda Monday in Irene.

BONESTEEL — South Central jumped to an early lead in its 52-23 win over Andes Central Thursday.

Tyler Frank scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds for South Central. Derek Sachtjen scored 10 points and had three assists.

South Central shot 20-of-55 from the field and 10-of-19 from the free-throw line. The Cougars had 37 total rebounds and 17 turnovers.

Gabe Cornoyer scored eight points and had four assists for Andes Central. Zach Cornoy scored five points and had two assists.

Andes Central shot 7-of-48 from the field and 8-of-17 from the free-throw line. The Eagles grabbed 26 total rebounds and 18 turnovers.

South Central (8-9) plays at Avon Feb. 18th. Andes Central (5-10) plays at Plankinton Tuesday.

South Central won the junior varsity game 29-13.

EMERY — Clayton Dye got a double-double to lead Bridgewater-Emery over Centerville 61-57 Thursday.

Dye scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds for Bridgewater-Emery. Jacob Schweitzer scored 15 points. Seth Wether had 10 assists.

Bridgewater-Emery shot 25-of-58 from the field and 9-of-18 from the free-throw line. The Huskies had 29 rebounds and 19 turnovers.

Seamus O’Malley scored 29 points for Centerville. Ty Knutson scored 15 points. Josh DeRaad grabbed seven rebounds.

Centerville shot 25-of-57 from the field and 6-of-14 from the free-throw line. The team had 23 rebounds and nine turnovers.

Bridgewater-Emery (12-5) plays at Mitchell Christian Tuesday. Centerville (13-4) hosts Gayville-Volin today.

Centerville won the junior varsity game 50-40.

MOUNT VERNON — Jacob Sonne scored 22 points to lead Mount Vernon over Plankinton 88-34 Thursday.

Jared Long scored 18 points and Cameron Deinert scored 11. Mount Vernon shot 35-of-70 from the field and 9-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Jordan Highelk scored 11 points to lead Plankinton. The Pirates shot 12-of-40 from the field and 5-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Mount Vernon (13-3) plays in the DWU Classic Saturday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Plankinton (1-14) hosts Andes Central Tuesday.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Darin Peterka scored a game-high 29 points as Miller defeated Wessington Springs 77-42 Thursday.

Joey Vrooman scored 20 points for Miller. Lee Sivertsen scored 12 points.

The Rustlers made 35-of-61 from the field and 4-of-10 from the free-throw line. Miller grabbed 40 rebounds as a team and committed 13 turnovers.

Trevor Kenobbie was the leading scorer for Wessington Springs with 17 points. Gus Gran scored nine points. Kenobbie grabbed eight rebounds and Terrek Butterfield grabbed seven.

The Spartans shot 16-of-47 from the field and 9-of-22 from the free-throw line. Wessington Springs had 29 total rebounds and 30 turnovers.

Miller (12-4) plays Faulkton Area Tuesday in Faulkton. Wessington Springs (8-9) plays Kimball/White Lake Tuesday in White Lake.

Miller also won the junior varsity game.

Tara Parmely scored 15 points. Watts and Parmely each grabbed eight rebounds. Jansen Hunter scored nine points. Mallory Fischer had eight assists.

The Rustlers shot 23-of-50 from the field and 12-of-18 from the free-throw line. Miller had 39 team rebounds and 19 turnovers.

Sheyanne Brodkorb was the high scorer for Wessington Springs with 12 points. Cassidy Musick scored 10 points. Shyanne Kopfmann grabbed six rebounds. Musick and Devin Tebay each had five rebounds.

The Lady Spartans shot 12-of-49 from the field and 7-of-14 from the fee-throw line. Wessington Springs grabbed 27 team rebounds and 20 turnovers.

Miller is 15-2 and hosts Crow Creek Saturday. Wessington Springs is 6-13 and finishes the season against Kimball/White Lake Monday in White Lake.

MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon was unable to keep a half-time lead as the Fillies were defeated by the Plankinton Lady Pirates 46-40 Thursday.

Jordan Achterberg scored 10 points for Plankinton. Megan Bultsma scored 10 points and had five steals.

Plankinton shot 8-of-23 from free-throw line. The Lady Pirates grabbed 27 rebounds and 22 turnovers.

Ashlee Dikoff had a double-double for Mount Vernon with 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Mount Vernon shot 15-of-39 from the field and 10-of-18 from the free-throw line. The Fillies had 32 team rebounds and 26 turnovers.

Plankinton (3-12) hosts Iroquois Monday. Mount Vernon (0-18) hosts South Central today.
