The James Valley Christian boys’ basketball team won its fifth game in a row on Tuesday as it defeated Mitchell Christian 69-51 at Mitchell Christian School.
James Valley Christian improved to 13-3 on the season, while Mitchell Christian fell to 4-13.
“James Valley is a good team with a lot of good athletes that are hard to guard,” Mitchell Christian’s head coach Dennis Martin said. “They kept us on our toes. I was proud of the way we played defensively.”
The Eagles looked like they were going to keep up with the offensive attack that JVC came out with. Midway through the first quarter, Mitchell Christian kept the game within two points, trailing 10-8.
Eventually, the shots stopped falling for the Eagles. MCHS trailed after the first quarter, 21-10.
“There are so many little things that teams need to improve on to be able to peak at the end of the season,” James Valley’s head coach Darwin Hofer said. “(Tuesday), we had some success.”
The second quarter put Mitchell Christian in an even bigger hole as it was outscored 22-6.
“Offensively, we still have some problems on executing the way we want,” Martin said.
Martin then decided to give a short halftime speech and sent the Eagles back onto the floor to get more work in shooting the basketball.
The decision worked to get some more production from Mitchell Christian’s offense. After only scoring 16 points in the first half, the team scored 14 and 21 points in the final two quarters.
Leading the Eagles in scoring was Aaron Lemon, who finished with 13 points. Jacob Frey was the only other Eagle in double digits as he finished with 10.
James Valley Christian was led by Andrew Ulvestad with 16 points. Alex Waldner added 12 for the Vikings and Nathan Wedel scored 10 in the victory. The Vikings had six players hit at least eight points on the night.
Mitchell Christian has another tough game ahead as it travels to Alexandria on Thursday to take on an 11-5 Hanson squad.
James Valley Christian’s next contest is on Friday as it hosts Dakota Christian (6-9).
JVC won the JV game 41-12.
