PIERRE (AP) — An amended bill on certifying public and private post-secondary schools in South Dakota will move forward in the Senate.

The Senate Education committee passed the bill 7-0. The bill goes next to the full Senate for a vote.

The bill creates a method for the Secretary of State to certify which schools are authorized to operate in South Dakota.

The legislation is in response to a federal mandate passed last year requiring states to certify all public and private post-secondary schools receiving federal student loans.

South Dakota received a one-year extension to get the process set up because the federal mandate passed after the 2012 legislative session ended.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard's office requested the legislation.
