The Mitchell wrestling team hosted Pierre on Friday night and would like to forget about the match as they fell 55-15.
The Kernels will look to bounce back on Thursday as they travel to Aberdeen in a dual against Aberdeen Central.
Mitchell’s top two wrestlers, Jason Greenway (160) and Brent Havlik (170) did not participate in Friday night’s dual.
Greenway also missed Thursday’s dual and Friday marked the third consecutive competition that the Kernels were missing Havlik.
Head coach Travis Carpenter refused to comment as to why the wrestlers did not participate in the duals.
When asked if the wrestlers would be competing come tournament time Carpenter said, “Oh yeah, they’ll all be back.”
Carpenter was upset that another top Kernel wrestler, Lakin Neugebauer, did not get to wrestle in Friday’s dual.
“We were really looking forward to wrestling at 126,” Carpenter said, “they didn’t want to wrestle. That was disappointing to us. That was a match we were looking forward to.”
The night started off miserably for the Kernels as 106-pounder Trey Hohn lost due to injury default. Hohn took a hard hit to his left elbow and was unable to continue.
Carpenter mentioned after the dual that it looked like Hohn was going to be o after the scare to start the match.
Dylon Bullock was the next Mitchell wrestler to take the mat. Bullock fell behind early and trailed 2-0 going into the second period.
Bullock started in the down position in the second period and recorded a reversal to tie the match going into the third period.
Pierre’s Nick Wiebe had aith that he could take down Bullock for a second time in the match, but with only one second left on the clock, Bullock recorded a takedown and a 4-2 victory.
Mitchell’s Alex Herrick would follow up that match with his second pin in as many nights and the Kernels took the lead in the team score 9-6.
A forfeit at 126 pounds for Lakin Neugebauer would put Mitchell up 15-6, but the Kernels would not win another match.
Tough overtime losses by Landon Neugebauer (138) and Nick Kummer (152) were sour points on the night for Carpenter.
“We got flat footed and lazy,” Carpenter said, “We’re at the end of the season, we can’t make mistakes like that.”
Thursday the Kernels will travel to Aberdeen for their last dual of the season before the Eastern South Dakota conference tournament. The region and state tournaments will follow the conference tournament.
