Area high school basketball roundup: Barry scores 16 points in Winner loss

WINNER — Miller defeated Winner 53-37 Saturday in girls’ high school basketball action. Miller was led in scoring by Tara Parmely, who scored 25 points. Jamie Mentzer had 12 points. Miller shot 14-of-22 from the field (64 percent). Miller had 33 total rebounds. Winner was led in scoring by Tawny Barry, who scored 16 points. Katie Mathis had 11 points. The loss brings Winner to 7-8. Winner faces off against Ainsworth, Neb. on Tuesday for its next action.

Lyman 47

PRESHO — Wall defeated Lyman 58-47 on Saturday in girls’ high school basketball action.

Lyman was led by Anna Flitner, who had a double-double for the game scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Haley Halverson had 10 points and Bailey Almond scored nine points. Lyman shot 18-of-43 from the field and went 9-of-16 from the free-throw line. Lyman had 26 total rebounds and 22 turnovers.

Almond had five assists and Flitner had three steals.

Wall shot 23-of-52 from the field. Wall had 31 rebounds and 22 total turnovers.

Lyman (1-14) plays Colome on Tuesday for its next action in Presho.

Menno 47, Marion 35

FREEMAN — Menno defeated Marion at the Cornbelt Conference Classic Saturday in girls’ high school basketball action.

Menno was led in scoring by Ashton Diede, who scored 12 points. Katelyn Kotalik had 11 points and seven rebounds. Kylee Kessler had 10 points. Menno shot 16-of-37 from the field and went 13-of-21 from the free-throw line. Menno had 33 total rebounds and 16 total turnovers.

Marion was led by Erica Schoenwald who had a double-double scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Marion shot 13-of-19 from the free-throw line. Marion had 23 total rebounds and eight total turnovers.

Menno moves to 6-9 with the win and hosts Avon for its next action on Tuesday.

Bridgewater-Emery 37

FREEMAN — Canistota defeated Bridgewater-Emery in the Cornbelt Conference Classic Saturday in girls’ high school basketball action.

Canistota was led in scoring Chloe Nielsen, who scored 17 points. Jenny Hofer had 13 points.

Canistota shot 19-of-38 from the field and went 13-of-18 from the free-throw line. Canistota had 24 total rebounds, Nielsen and Hofer each had six rebounds. Carolyn Schroeder had five assists. Canistota had 15 total turnovers.

Bridgewater-Emery was led by Elizabeth Schnable, who scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Justine Dye scored 12 points. Bridgewater-Emery shot 14-of-47 from the field and went 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Bridgewater-Emery had 20 total rebounds and 11 total turnovers.

Canistota is now 7-7 with the win and hosts Irene-Wakonda today.

Bridgewater-Emery is now 5-9 and hosts Dell Rapids St. Mary today for its next action.

Hanson 71, Freeman 58

FREEMAN — Hanson defeated Freeman 71-58 in the Cornbelt Conference Classic Saturday in girls’ high school basketball action.

Hanson was led in scoring by Cassidy Graham, who scored 18 points. Ashley Robinson had 15 points and Kendra Cheeseman had 10 points. Hanson shot 30-of-47 from the field and went 10-of-16 from the free-throw line.

Freeman was led in scoring by Kaitlyn Stern, who scored 18 points. Paige Herrboldt had 13 points. Freeman shot 24-of-48 from the field and went 6-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Hanson moves to 13-3 with the win and is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Dakota Christian. Freeman is now 9-5 and hosts Marty Indian School today.

West Central — West Central defeated Platte-Geddes 79-69 Saturday in girls’ high school basketball action. Platte-Geddes was led in scoring by Kelly Knudson, who had 23 points. Josie DeGroot scored 16 points and Shelby Rabenberg had 12 points. Kelle Griese grabbed seven rebounds.

West Central was led in scoring by Madison Kuehl, who scored 29 points. Afton Johnson and Allie Macdonald each scored 14 points.

Platte-Geddes drops to 6-9 with the loss, and hosts Chamberlain on Tuesday for its next game.

Menno 54, Marion 34

FREEMAN — Menno defeated Marion 54-34 in the Cornbelt Conference Classic on Saturday in boys’ high school basketball action.

Menno was led by Austin Herrboldt, who scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Ben Fischer had 12 points. David Schelske had 12 rebounds. Menno shot 16-of-34 from the field and went 4-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Marion was led by Nick Gortmaker who had 19 points, 10 steals and five assists. Marion shot 11-of-36 from the field and went 11-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Menno moves to 5-9 with the win and hosts Avon today for its next action.

Marion drops to 1-11 and plays Menno again next Monday.

FREEMAN — Bridgewater-Emery defeated Freeman 61-50 in the Cornbelt Conference Classic on Saturday in boys’ high school basketball action.

Bridgewater-Emery was led by Seth Wethor and Terry Weber, who each scored 19 points. Jacob Schweitzer had 13 points.

Bridgewater-Emery shot 21-of-51 from the field and went 17-of-28 from the free-throw line.

Freeman was led in scoring by Cole Paulson, who scored 16 points. Jordan Rinehart had 12 points and Caleb Lang scored 10 points. Freeman shot 16-of-56 from the field and went 12-of-22 from the free-throw line.

Bridgewater-Emery (10-3) travels to Mount Vernon for its next action on Tuesday.

Freeman (7-7) travels to Scotland today.

Canistota was led in scoring by Alex Robertson, who scored 19 points. Jason Van Winkle had 12 points and nine rebounds. Eric Tieszen had five assists. Canistota shot 23-of-41 from the field and went 6-of-10 from the free-throw line. Canistota had 28 total rebounds and 14 total turnovers.

Hanson as led in scoring by Jacob Bartscher, who scored 11 points. Alex Kayser had 10 points. Hanson shot 16-of-36 from the field and had nine total rebounds.

Canistota moves to 12-0 with the win and plays Viborg/Hurley for its next game on Tuesday.

Hanson drops to 10-3 and plays West Central at the Schoolers Classic on Saturday.

Lyman 47, Wall 36

PRESHO — Lyman defeated Wall 47-36 on Saturday in boys’ high school basketball action. Lyman was led in scoring by Hunter Schindler and Jaelani Uthe, who each scored 16 points. Lyman shot 18-of-47 from the field and went 10-of-22 from the free-throw line. Schindler had nine of Lyman’s 29 total rebounds. Stetsen Eriksen and Uthe each grabbed seven rebounds. Lyman had 10 total turnovers.

Wall was led in scoring by Chavis Schull, who scored 14 points. Wall shot 14-of-44 from the field and went 5-of-13 from the free-throw line. Wall had 35 total rebounds. Laketon McLauglin had eight rebounds, Schull had seven rebounds and Tyler Peterson grabbed six rebounds. Wall had 27 total rebounds.

Lyman moves to 8-4 with the win and is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Gregory. Wall drops to 7-7 and plays White River for its next game on Thursday.

Saint Thomas More 53 Winner 46

WINNER — St. Thomas more defeated Winner 53-46 Saturday in boys’ high school basketball action.Winner was led in scoring by Kyle Mathis, who scored 15 points. Austin Schroder had 13 points.

Winner shot 19-of-55 from the field (34 percent) and went 6-17 from the free-throw line. Winner had six total turnovers and 26 total rebounds.

STM shot 19-of-48 from the field (39 percent) and went 9-19 from the free-throw line. STM had 26 total rebounds.

Winner drops to 10-3 with the loss and travels to Ainsworth, Neb. for its next game on Tuesday.
