BRANDON VALLEY — Mitchell defeated Brandon Valley 60-37 Thursday night in boys’ high school basketball action.

Head coach Gary Munsen said his team played a better game than its first matchup of the season against the Lynx on Jan. 17.

“The first half was kind of like our first game against (Brandon Valley),” Munsen said. “We missed a lot of shots, but we had better shot selection and better ball movement.”

Munsen said he didn’t have the team do anything different in this game, but he said during the second half of Thursday night’s game, the Kernels tightened up on defense.

Munsen said the one thing Mitchell needs to work on is making all of its free throws. Mitchell was 11-of-18 from the free-throw line Thursday night.

“Our free throws were really bad again (Thursday) like always,” Munsen said. “If we had made all of our free throws we could have been up by 12 or 14 points instead of by six points.”

Munsen said that was really the only complaint he had about Thursday night’s game. The Kernels were led in scoring by Tucker Volesky, who scored 15 points. Brady Maxwell and Matt Henriksen had 12 points each. Jade Miller scored 10 points.

Mitchell shot 51 percent from the field and shot 61 percent from the free-throw line.

Brandon Valley was led in scoring by Ben Schultz, who scored 13 points. Jacob Adams had 12 points. Brandon Valley shot 13-of-45 from the field and went 9-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Mitchell’s next action is on Tuesday when it travels to Pierre.
