South Dakota’s milk production rose 1 percent for the most recent quarter from a fewer number of cows.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the state produced 469 million pounds for last year’s October-December quarter, up from 461 million pounds during the same period in 2010.

The average number of cows during this period was 89,000, which is down 1,000 from both the previous quarter and the October-December quarter in the previous year.

South Dakota’s July-September 2011 milk production was revised from 458 million pounds up to 461 million pounds. But the average number of milk cows for the quarter remained unchanged at 90,000.
