USD men lose to Western Illinois
VERMILLION — The University of South Dakota men’s basketball team lost to Western Illinois 47-45 in a Summit League game on Saturday.
Charlie Westbrook led the Coyotes with 18 points and eight rebounds. Louie Krogman added 11 points and six boards.
With the loss the Boytes fell to 7-12 overall and 5-5 in the league.
South Dakota returns to action Thursday at Oral Roberts. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. in Tulsa, Okla.
Coyote women beat Illinois 78-57
VERMILLION — University of South Dakota women’s basketball team beat Western Illinois 78-57 Saturday in a Summit League match up.
With the win, the Coyotes improve to 11-6 overall and 3-5 in the Summit League.
South Dakota is back in action when it hosts Indiana University-Purdue University- Indianapolis today at 7 p.m.
DeVestern sets DWU pin record
WORTHINGTON, Minn. —Dakota Wesleyan University’s Trevor DeVestern set the school record for pins in a season at the Worthington Open on Saturday.
DeVestern, a freshman 157-pounder from Pearblossom, Calif., pinned the University of Minnesota’s Matt Mincey in 5:42 in his first match of the day to mark his 20th pin on the season and break the school record.
The old record was 19 pins, set in 2001 by Justin Portenier.
SDSU beats NDSU 91-88 in overtime
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Nate Wolters scored 27 points, including five of his team’s 15 in overtime, and South Dakota State held off interstate rival North Dakota State 91-88 on Saturday night.
Jordan Dykstra added 20 points and Griffan Callahan had 19 for the Jackrabbits (16-5, 8-1 Summit), who got their first win in Fargo since the 2004-05 season.
Taylor Braun led the Bison (13-6, 6-4) with 28 points, including a game-tying layup with 8 seconds left in regulation.
Ita was Braun’s third basket in the final 52 seconds.
Wolters missed a 3-pointer as time expired, forcing overtime.
