RAPID CITY (AP) — Occupy Rapid City says it will stage a protest at the federal courthouse on Friday afternoon marking the second anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United decision.
That 5-4-ruling found that corporations have the same rights as individuals to make unlimited contributions to independent groups seeking to influence elections.
The 4:30 p.m. MST event at the Rapid City federal courthouse is part of a series of protests across the country.
The effort is being promoted by the national group Move to Amend, which is organizing for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution denying personhood to corporations.
The Rapid City group says the effect of SuperPACs can be seen in the current election cycle in both South Dakota and national elections.
