LENNOX (AP) — A former teacher in the southeast South Dakota city of Lennox faces a Feb. 22 hearing before a state commission that could recommend the suspension or revocation of his teaching license.
The media reports that an ethics complaint filed with the Professional Teachers Practices and Standards Commission alleges 53-year-old George Sazama had sex with a 17-year-old student. He was placed on paid administrative leave in October and resigned late last year.
No criminal charges have been filed in the case. The age of consent in South Dakota is 16, and the state has no law criminalizing sex between teachers and students.
Sazama's wife says he resigned because he found a different job. Lennox Superintendent Robert Mayer says the school district's investigation did not prove or disprove the allegation.
