LETTER: Emergency crews prove their worth

Little thought is given to service of fire and police departments until we need them personally.

Monday, an undetected nighttime fire caused the beautiful home next to us to burn to the ground. What a tragedy.

Miraculously, our home just a few feet away was saved by the work of our Mitchell fire department.

Even before firefighters arrived, police were pounding on the door to rouse Craig Steinke, my grandson caretaker, to the potential danger of the fire spreading to our home and to be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice.

Fortunately, the winds were blowing the flames away from us, but the houses were so close the heat from the fire caused our windows to be hot to the touch. It was amazing that our house remained totally unharmed.
