Cheyenne River tribe could lose buffalo herd, land in dispute

RAPID CITY (AP) — The Cheyenne River Sioux tribe's buffalo herd and some of its land may be auctioned off if the tribe can't settle a $1 million dispute.

RAPID CITY (AP) — The Cheyenne River Sioux tribe's buffalo herd and some of its land may be auctioned off if the tribe can't settle a $1 million dispute.

Attorneys for rancher Clint Amiotte say the tribe has until Thursday to negotiate a deal.

A federal judge has ruled a tribal company owes more than $1 million to Amiotte. The Interior rancher sold 308 buffalo to the tribe, and he says he hasn't been paid.

The media reports that the tribal company didn't show up in court to contest the case. An attorney for the company is trying to get the court ruling set aside.

Cheyenne River Sioux tribal chairman Kevin Keckler won't comment on the case. Keckler wouldn't specify the size of the tribe's buffalo herd.
