DEADWOOD (AP) — The Forest Service and the Lawrence County Commission have reached an agreement to fight pine beetles on federal land.
The agreement allows county-hired subcontractors to enter Forest Service land to mark and treat green infested trees for mountain pine beetles.
The media reports that agreement is the first of its kind between the Forest Service and a county government. More than 400,000 acres of the Black Hills have been infected by pine beetles in the past decade.
Volunteer groups and companies supported the agreement, with several pledging money to aid the fight against the infestation.
