Area basketball roundup: Gregory girls edge Platte-Geddes 60-58

GREGORY — Gregory was behind at half-time but came back to defeat Platte-Geddes 60-58 Friday.

Baili McCance got a double-double for Gregory with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Tanya Talsma scored 19 points. Shelby Rajewich scored 11 points and had seven assists.

Kelly Knudson scored 13 points for Platte-Geddes and got six rebounds. Shelby Rabenberg scored 12 points. The Black Panthers shot 38 percent from the field and 31 percent from the free-throw line.

Gregory is 3-1 for the season and travels to Presho Jan. 3 to take on Lyman. Platte-Geddes is 1-2 and hosts Freeman today in Platte.

McCook Central/Montrose 58, Howard 28

HOWARD — The McCook Central/Montrose girls basketball team picked up a win on the road over Howard 58-28 Friday.

Katie Binder had high scoring with 14 points for McCook Central/Montrose. Kelly Binder scored 12 points. Sierra Miles and Rachel Bartscher each scored 10 points and Miles got seven rebounds.

As a team the Fighting Cougars got 48 rebounds and shot 28-of-59 from the field and 10-of-17 from the free-throw line.

Howard was led by Kelsey Dawson, who scored 12 points and got six rebounds.

As a team the Tigers got 34 rebounds and shot 11-of-73 field goals and 7-of-10 free throws.

McCook Central/Montrose is 2-2 this season and travels to Tea Monday to take on Tea Area. Howard is now 1-3 and hosts Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Monday.

McCook Central/Montrose won the junior varsity game 29-22.

Wagner 46, West Central 40

WAGNER — Jessa Doom got a double-double to lead Wagner over West Central 46-40 Friday.

Doom scored 14 points and got 11 rebounds. Devon Brecke scored 21 points. LaShawn Medicine Horn got nine rebounds.

The Red Raiders shot 14-of-41 for 34 percent from the field and 16-of-21 from the free-throw line for 76 percent. The team got 33 total rebounds.

Madison Kuehl scored 13 points for the Trojans. Allie Macdonald scored 10 points and got nine rebounds.

West Central shot 13-of-46 from the field for 28 percent and 9-of-16 from the free-throw line for 56 percent. West Central got 26 team rebounds.

Wagner (4-0) travels to New Holland today to play Dakota Christian. West Central (1-2) travels to Elk Point Tuesday to play Elk Point-Jefferson.

Wagner also won the junior varsity game.

Freeman 61, Canistota 42

FREEMAN — Freeman defeated Canistota 61-42 Friday night.

Freeman shot 23-of-56 from the field for 50 percent and went 10-of-10 from the free throw line for 100 percent. They had 19 rebounds as a team, and seven turnovers. Erika Sage led in scoring with 14 points. Paige Herrboldt and Dina Soulek both had 13 points, and Carly Vecker had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Canistota shot 6-of-12 from the free throw for 50 percent. They had 24 rebounds as a team and 13 turnovers. Haley Jerman led in scoring with 12 points and Jenny Hofer had 10.

Kayla Marquardt had seven rebounds.

Freeman (2-1) heads to Platte-Geddes for their next game tonight and Canistota (2-3) hosts Bridgewater-Emery on Tuesday.

Hanson 57, Menno 24

HANSON — Hanson defeated Menno 57-24 Friday night.

Hanson shot 22-of-64 from the field and 31-of-25 from the free throw line. Ashley Robinson led in scoring with 19 points. Kendra Cheeseman and Cassidy Graham both had 11 points. The team had 35 rebounds, Robinson grabbed ten of them. They had 33 turnovers.

Menno went 10-of-33 from the field and shot 4-of-14 from the free throw line. Menno was led in scoring by Kylee Kessler with 10 points. Courtney Schaeffer had nine rebounds. The team had 31 total rebounds and 27 turnovers.

The Hanson JV team beat Menno 42 to 15.

Hanson (2-2) travels to Marion for their next game on Tuesday. Menno (3-2) plays Irene/Wakonda at Wakonda on Dec. 27.

Boys Basketball

Bon Homme 50, Scotland 34

TYNDALL — Bon Homme got its first win of the season over Scotland 50-34 Friday.

Charlie Bentzen scored 15 points and got five rebounds in the win. Les Jelsma scored 11 points. The Cavaliers shot 21-of-41 from the field and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Garrett Kotalik scored 10 points for the Highlanders.

Bon Homme (1-2) hosts Dakota Christian in Tyndall Tuesday. Scotland (0-3) hosts Chamberlain Dec. 27.

Corsica/Stickney 73, Plankinton 34

CORSICA — The Corsica/Stickney boys basketball team got its second win of the season over Plankinton Friday night with a score of 73-34.

Ryan Hongslo and Adam Bormann each scored 17 points for Corsica/Stickney. Hongslo also got eight rebounds. Lane Thomas scored 14 points and had six steals. Aaron Groeneweg scored 10 points.

Corsica/Stickney shot 49 percent field goals and 48 percent free throws and got 33 rebounds as a team.

Kellam Karst scored 15 points and got six rebounds for Plankinton. The Pirates got 22 rebounds as a team and shot 42 percent from the field and 31 percent from the free-throw line.

Corsica/Stickney (2-0) plays Wessington Springs in Corsica Thursday. Plankinton (0-3) plays Wolsey-Wessington in Wolsey Tuesday.

Corsica/Stickney also won the junior varsity game.

Chamberlain 61, Parkston 21

CHAMBERLAIN — Chamberlain kept Parkston from scoring in the third quarter to win 61-21 Friday.

Tyson Langdeau scored 13 points in the win. Skyler Bertram scored 10 points. Gage Basting scored nine points and had seven rebounds. The Cubs got 30 rebounds as a team and shot 22-of-48 from the field and 11-of-19 free throws.

Parker Van Zee scored 10 points for Parkston. The Trojans had 21 team rebounds and shot 6-of-39 from the field and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Chamberlain is 2-0 and hosts Winner on Tuesday. Parkston is 0-2 and travels to Avon Tuesday.

Chamberlain won the junior varsity game 39-14.

Miller 70, Lyman 39

MILLER — Miller defeated Lyman 70-39 in boys’ basketball action Friday night.

No stats were reported for the game.

Miller (3-0) plays Todd County in Mission Dec. 27. Lyman (2-1) hosts South Central Dec. 29.

Thursday’s games

HARTINGTON, Neb. — Hartington Cedar Catholic defeated Avon Thursday night in a girls’ basketball game 42-34.

Hartington Cedar Catholic (1-4) shot 12-of-28 from the field for 43 percent and went 15-of-21 from the free throw line for 71 percent.

HCC was led in scoring by Katelyn Dickes, who had 23 points, and Emily Schrempp, who had 10 points.

The team had 31 total rebounds. Dickes had eight rebounds and Lexi Steffen had seven.

Avon (1-2) shot 10-of-26 from the field for 38 percent and went 11-of-16 from the free throw line for 69 percent.

The Pirates were led in scoring by Chesney Nagel, who had 13 points and four steals, and Lanae VanGerpen, who had eight points.

Avon had a total of 23 team rebounds with Van Gerpen grabbing five boards.

SCOTLAND — Bon Homme defeated Scotland 54-52 Thursday night in girls’ basketball action.

Bon Homme (2-1) was led in scoring by Raquel Sutera, who had 23 points, and Sara Burbach, who had 14. Sutera also had 13 rebounds and four assists. Burbach ended the night with four steals.

Scotland (2-1) was led in scoring by Aisha Abbink, who had 14 points. Haley Brunke added 11 points and Ashley Alvey had 10 points. Kennidy Asche had eight rebounds and Alvey and Carley Skorepa had six rebounds each.
