SD officials not buoyed by postal closings delay

RAPID CITY (AP) — Many officials in western South Dakota aren't optimistic that the U.S. Postal Service will change a plan to close many small post offices and the mail processing center in Rapid City.

The Postal Service has agreed to delay the closing of 252 processing centers and 3,700 post offices nationwide until mid-May, to give Congress more time to pass legislation that would help the service stave off bankruptcy.

Denise Morgan in the South Dakota town of Pringle doubts the delay will make a difference. She tells the media that she thinks the closings are inevitable. John Bad Wound of Allen also says he doesn't think the postponement changes much.

State Rep. Betty Olson of Prairie City is more optimistic, calling the delay "a step in the right direction."
