Area basketball roundup: Gottlob’s huge game leads MCM to victory

SALEM — Shayne Gottlob’s double-double helped the No. 3-ranked McCook Central/Montrose boys’ basketball team defeat Tea Area 56-34 Tuesday.

SALEM — Shayne Gottlob’s double-double helped the No. 3-ranked McCook Central/Montrose boys’ basketball team defeat Tea Area 56-34 Tuesday.

Gottlob scored 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for MCM (2-0). Gavin Gassman added nine points and Jordan Wolf had nine rebounds.

MCM outrebounded Tea (0-2) 47-22 and held Tea Area to 24 percent (13-of-45) shooting.

MCM hit 24-of-69 shots for 35 percent. MCM made 10-of-12 free throws, compared to 6-of-17 for Tea.

MCM had 23 turnovers and Tea had 10.

Riley Knutson scored eight points and had three steals for Tea.

McCook Central/Montrose plays Thursday at home in Salem against Howard.

Corsica/Stickney 46, Avon 43

CORSICA — Adam Bormann scored 23 points to lead Corsica/Stickney past Avon 46-43 Tuesday in the Jaguars’ season-opener.

Corsica/Stickney is the defending Class B champion.

Bormann added five rebounds and Ryan Hongslo scored 10 points for Corsica/Stickney (2-0).

Nick Poppe scored 16 points for Avon (0-1), Luke VanGerpen added 12 points and Brandon Kocmich grabbed eight rebounds.

Corsica/Stickney won the JV game 33-28.

Corsica/Stickney plays Friday at home in Stickney against Plankinton. Avon plays Tuesday at home against Parkston.

Freeman Academy 40

FREEMAN — Oldham-Ramona/Rutland pulled away in the second half for a 54-40 win over Freeman Academy Tuesday.

Freeman Academy (1-1) trailed 24-21 at halftime. Josh Stahl scored 21 points for the Bobcats and Caleb Glader and Ben Carlson both grabbed eight rebounds.

Freeman Academy hit 14-of-33 shots from the field and 10-of-19 free throws. Freeman Academy had 19 turnovers.

Braxton Olson scored 19 points for ORR.

Freeman Academy plays Saturday at Walthill, Neb.

PLANKINTON — Plankinton led after the first quarter, but fell to Ethan 45-29 in a Class B boys’ basketball game Tuesday.

Blake Bartscher was Ethan’s top scorer with 13 points. Kendall Lindeman scored nine points and got nine rebounds.

Kellam Karst scored 11 points for Plankinton. Nick Lawson scored seven points and got six rebounds. Tom Harris got five rebounds.

Ethan, who is now 2-0, hosts Mount Vernon Thursday. Plankinton moves to 0-2 and plays Friday at Stickney against Corsica/Stickney

MILLER — The Miller boys’ basketball team picked up its second win over Gettysburg 58-36 Tuesday.

Darin Peterka scored 31 points for the Rustlers in the win. Joey Vrooman scored 10 points. Miller shot 44 percent field goals and 20 percent free throws.

Eric Worth scored 15 points for the Battlers. Miller (2-0) hosts Lyman Friday. Gettysburg (0-2) plays Hoven/Edmunds Central in Hoven Thursday.

Miller won the junior varsity game 50-26.

PARKSTON — Trevor Payer had a double-double for Tripp-Delmont/Armour in its 55-38 win over Parkston Tuesday.

Payer scored 21 points and pulled down 17 rebounds. Adam Fink scored 20 points. The Nighthawks shot 20-of-45 field goals for 44 percent and 11-of-17 free throws for 65 percent.

Zach Scott scored eight points for Parkston. Spencer Lucas and Kyle Hohn each scored six points. The Trojans shot 16-of-49 field goals for 33 percent and 2-of-2 free throws for 100 percent.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour (2-0) plays Bridgewater-Emery in Emery Saturday. Parkston (0-1) plays at Chamberlain Friday.

The junior varsity game was won by Tripp-Delmont/Armour 32-17.

MILLER — Sunshine Bible Academy picked up its second win this season when it defeated Faulkton Area 44-32 Tuesday.

Cole McClain scored 11 points for the Crusaders and Jaden Brockel scored 10 points. Joel Pedersen got 10 rebounds and Brian LaDue got nine rebounds.

Sunshine Bible shot 23-of-59 field goals for 39 percent and 4-of-10 free throws for 40 percent. The Crusaders had 34 team rebounds.

Sunshine Bible Academy is 2-0 and hosts James Valley Christian Friday. Faulkton Area is 0-2 and hosts Herreid/Selby Area Thursday.

ONIDA — Sully Buttes defeated Lyman 57-43 in boys’ basketball action Tuesday.

Hunter Schindler scored 15 points and Jaylen Uthe scored nine points for Lyman. The Raiders shot 16-of-54 from the field and 5-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Sully Buttes is 2-0 and hosts Modridge-Pollock Dec. 20th. Lyman drops to 1-1 and plays at Miller Friday.

PLATTE — Maria Nightingale’s double-double helped lead Kimball/White Lake over Platte-Geddes 65-39 Tuesday.

Nightingale finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds for the WiLdKats (3-0). Jill Jandreau added 15 points, Kelcey Long scored nine points and Hailey Mohnen had eight assists and six rebounds.

For Platte-Geddes (1-1), Haley Whalen scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds and Kelli Sprik had seven points.

Kimball/White Lake plays Thursday at home in Kimball against Mitchell Christian. Platte-Geddes plays Friday at Gregory.

GREGORY — After a slow start, Gregory came back to beat Dakota Christian 47-34 Tuesday.

Gregory (2-1) trailed Dakota Christian (1-2) 18-13 at halftime, but outscored the Cadets 17-8 in the third quarter to take the lead.

Tanya Talsma led the Gorillas with 15 points and three steals, Courtney Peterson scored nine points and Paxten Johnson grabbed nine rebounds.

Laurel Zomer had a double-double for Dakota Christian with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sara De Waard added 10 points and Amy Overweg dished out five assists.

Gregory plays Friday at home against Platte-Geddes. Dakota Christian plays Saturday at home in New Holland against Wagner.

CANISTOTA — Colman-Egan held Canistota to one point in the extra period and came back to beat the Hawks 54-46 in overtime Tuesday.

Canistota (1-3) had a 32-27 halftime lead, but Colman-Egan (1-1) outscored the Hawks 12-2 in the third quarter. Canistota outscored Colman-Egan 11-6 in the fourth quarter, but were outscored 9-1 in overtime.

For Canistota, Chloe Nielsen scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Haley Jerman added 16 points, Carolyn Schroeder had seven assists and Kayla Marquardt had seven rebounds.

Canistota shot 17-of-40 from the field and 12—of-18 from the free throw line. The Hawks turned the ball over 28 times.

Carli Johnson grabbed nine rebounds, had seven steals and dished out five assists. Colman-Egan hit 20-of-49 field goals, and 12-of-23 free throws.

Canistota plays Friday at Freeman.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Chamberlain shot 51 percent from the field in an 86-31 win over Wessington Springs Tuesday.

Chamberlain (2-0) hit 39 of 76 shots and were 8-of-18 from the field. The Cubs forced Wessington Springs to turn the ball over 30 times.

Kennedy Wagner led Chamberlain with 17 points. Jaymee Knippling had a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Frankie Willard added 13 points and six assists, Corrina Reuer had 12 points and Alex Pederson had 11 points.

For Wessington Springs (0-3), Mindy Kraft scored 11 points and Shyanne Kopfmann grabbed eight rebounds.

Wessington Springs shot 13-of-38 from the field for 34 percent, and 10-of-32 from the free throw line for 31 percent.

Chamberlain plays Friday at home against Parkston. Wessington Springs plays Thursday in Tulare against Hitchcock-Tulare.

Cassie Bamberg scored 11 points and had eight rebounds in the win. Emily Van Roekel scored nine points and had six assists and Micayla Bamberg scored nine points. Corsica/Stickney shot 15-of-42 from the field and 19-of-30 from the free-throw line.

Lanae VanGerpen scored 18 points and had five rebounds for Avon. The Lady Pirates shot 38 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line.

Corsica/Stickney hosts Plankinton Thursday in Stickney. Avon (1-1) travels to Hartington, NE, to take on Hartington Cedar Catholic Thursday.

For the Wolves, Kylee Kessler scored 10 points and got four rebounds. Tessa Goehring and Erika Hauck had five rebounds each.

Scotland improves to 2-0 and hosts Bon Homme Thursday. Menno travels to Alexandria Friday to take on Hanson.

Scotland won the junior varsity game 41-12.
