Sunday's area basketball roundup: Denning scores 24 in Mount Vernon win

MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon defeated Kimball/White Lake 71-54 in the season-opener for both teams Saturday.

MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon defeated Kimball/White Lake 71-54 in the season-opener for both teams Saturday.

Deric Denning was the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 24 points. Dean Frey led the defense with 14 rebounds. The Mustangs shot 30-of-69 from the field for 43 percent and went 18-of-29 from the free-throw line for 62 percent. Mount Vernon had 33 team rebounds.

Jesse Taylor had a team high 29 points for the WiLdKats. Kimball/White Lake had 35 team rebounds and shot 23-of-57 from the field for 40 percent. Kimball/White Lake shot 9-of-16 from the free-throw line for 56 percent.

Mount Vernon (1-0) hosts Mitchell Christian Monday. Kimball/White Lake (0-1) hosts Mitchell Christian Thursday.

Ethan 36, Hanson 21

ETHAN — Ethan started its boys’ basketball season with a 36-21 win over Hanson Saturday.

Ethan was led in scoring by Ryan Hanks with 10 points. Blake Bartscher scored seven points. Anthony Huber and Kendall Lindeman had eight rebounds each.

Jordan Marquardt scored a team-high nine points for Hanson. Jacob Bartscher got five rebounds.

Ethan also won the JV game with a final score of 29-24.

Ethan (1-0) plays at Plankinton Tuesday. Hanson (1-1) travels to Menno Thursday.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour 47,

Menno 13

MENNO — Tripp-Delmont/Armout picked up a win on the road with its 47-13 win over Menno Saturday.

Adam Fink led the Nighthawks in scoring with 21 points. Dylan Peters brought down seven rebounds. As a team, Tripp-Delmont/Armour was 25-of-49 from the field and 3-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Austin Herrboldt led Menno with 11 points. Menno shot 6-of-40 from the field and 3-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour (1-0) will play in Parkston Tuesday. Menno (0-1) will host Hanson Thursday.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour also won the junior varsity game 33-12.

South Central 56, Scotland 23

SCOTLAND — Tyler Frank scored a team-high 16 points in South Central’s 56-23 win over Scotland Saturday.

Derek Sachtjen scored eight points and had six rebounds for the Cougars. Sam Hazen scored seven points and had 11 rebounds. South Central shot 8-of-13 for 61 percent from the free-throw line.

Levi Geiman scored nine points and had three rebounds for the Highlanders. Taylor Bietz scored six points and brought down five rebounds. The Highlanders shot 7-of-41 for 17 percent from the field and 9-of-17 for 52 percent from the free-throw line.

South Central (1-0) travels to Springview, Neb., Tuesday to take on Rock County. Scotland (0-1) hosts Viborg/Hurley Monday.

McCook Central/Montrose 64, Parker 34

PARKER — McCook Central/Montrose won its season-opening game on the road Saturday over Parker, 64-34.

Shayne Gottlob led the Fighting Cougars in scoring with 19 points. Andy Kappenman scored 12 points, and Will Gottlob scored nine points. As a team, the Fighting Cougars shot 26-of-52 from the field and 8-of-17 from the free-throw line. The team had 46 rebounds.

Jake Anderson was the lead scorer for the Pheasants with 13 points. Cedric Hay scored five points. Parker shot 15-of-54 from the field and 0-of-2 from the free-throw line. The Pheasants had 23 rebounds.

McCook Central/Montrose (1-0) hosts Tea Area in Montrose Tuesday night. Parker (0-1) travels to take on Baltic Tuesday night.

PLATTE — Platte-Geddes opened its season with a 52-39 win over Dakota Christian Saturday.

Dillon Werkmeister led Platte-Geddes (1-0) with 19 points. Richard Sternberg and Matthew Randall both scored 10 points and Hunter Johnson grabbed nine rebounds.

Platte-Geddes shot 21-of-53 from the field and had nine turnovers.

For Dakota Christian (0-1), Michael Buitenbos scored a game-high 20 points and Jake Spoelstra scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds.

Dakota Christian hit 11-of-40 field goals and had 11 turnovers.

Platte-Geddes plays today at Lake Andes against Andes Central. Dakota Christian plays Saturday against Wagner at home in New Holland.

WINNER — Winner lost its season-opener to Harrisburg 68-60 Saturday.

Kyle Mathis led Winner (0-1) with 12 points, Ben Connot had 11 points, Nathan Naasz scored 10 points and Isaiah Old Lodge grabbed eight rebounds.

Winner went 13-of-37 from the free throw line and 23-of-57 from the field.

Winner plays Tuesday at Fort Pierre against Stanley County.

MILLER — Sanborn Central/Woonsocket lost its first game of the season 65-37 to Sunshine Bible Academy.

Davion Brookes and Joe Davis both scored eight points for SC/W (0-1), and Brookes had eight rebounds.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket plays Saturday in Woonsocket against Mount Vernon.

Wagner 59, Avon 40

WAGNER — Wagner pulled away for a 59-40 win over Avon Saturday.

Wagner had a 19-17 halftime lead before outscoring Avon 24-10 in the third quarter.

Noah St. Pierre scored 15 points for Wagner (1-0) and Jack Robinson had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Branson Tolliver added 14 points.

Luke VanGerpen scored 13 points for Avon (0-1), and John Wynia had eight points.

Wagner plays Saturday in New Holland against Dakota Christian. Avon plays today in Corsica against Corsica/Stickney.

PRESHO — Lyman opened its season with a 43-23 win over Gettysburg Saturday.

Jaelani Uthe scored 16 points and had five assists for Lyman (1-0). Hunter Schindler added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Lyman hit 17-of-34 shots in the win.

Lyman plays Tuesday in Onida against Sully Buttes.

PLATTE — The Platte-Geddes girls’ basketball team picked up a 60-45 win over Dakota Christian Saturday.

Kelli Sprik led the Black Panthers scoring with 21 points. Shelby Rabenberg added 17 points and Kelly Knudson had 11 points. Kellee Griese had five assists. Platte-Geddes shot 44 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free-throw line.

Laurel Zomer was the leading scorer for Dakota Christian with 16 points. Brooklyn VanderPol scored 11 points. Amber Baan Hofman had 11 rebounds and Laurel Zomer had 10 rebounds. Amy Overweg had five steals. As a team, Dakota Christian shot 32 percent from the field and 51 from the free-throw line.

Platte-Geddes (1-0) hosts Kimball/White Lake Tuesday. Dakota Christian (1-1) plays at Gregory Tuesday.

MILLER — Sanborn Central/Woonsocket defeated Sunshine Bible Academy 44-39 Saturday in girls’ basketball action.

Shelby Selland was the high scorer for Sanborn Central/Woonsocket with 16 points. She also had nine rebounds. Rachelle Moore scored 11 points. Rachel Selland scored 11 points and had 12 rebounds. As a team, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket shot 9-of-27 from the field and 1-of-3 from the free-throw line.

For Sunshine Bible Academy Shanna Moreland scored 11 points. Bethany LaDue scored 10 points and had seven rebounds. Moreland, Kallie Quick, and Sarah Pedersen each had six rebounds. As a team, the Crusaders shot 8-of-24 from the field and 4-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (2-0) hosts Mount Vernon in Woonsocket on Saturday. Sunshine Bible Academy (1-1) hosts Faulkton Area Tuesday.

MENNO — The Menno High School girls’ basketball team brought its win streak to three with a win over Tripp-Delmont Armour 41-36 Saturday.

Kylee Kessler scored a team high 22 points in the win. Kessler also had 10 rebounds. Courtney Schaeffer had nine rebounds and Tessa Goehring and Alicia Kulish had eight rebounds each. Katelyn Kotalik had seven steals.

Julie Mingo scored 16 points for the Nighthawks. LaNae Feurst scored six points and Rebecca Brown scored five points.

Menno (3-0) hosts Scotland Tuesday. Tripp-Delmont/Armour (0-3) travels to play Wagner Monday.

Menno won the junior varsity game 41-21.

WAGNER — Wagner pulled away after a first-quarter tie game to defeat Lennox 63-31 Saturday.

Devon Brecke scored 28 points and had five assists for the Red Raiders. LaShawn Medicine Horn scored 15 points, brought down seven rebounds and had six steals. Jessa Doom had eight rebounds.

The Red Raiders shot 26-of-53 from the field and 9-of-17 from the free-throw line. The team had 25 rebounds.

Kayla Plimpton was the leading scorer for Lennox with 15 points. The Orioles shot 12-of-32 from the field and 5-of-15 from the free-throw line and had 25 rebounds.

Wagner (2-0) hosts Tripp-Delmont/Armour Monday. Lennox (0-3) travels to Hartford to take on West Central Monday.

WINNER — Harrisburg scored 32 points in the fourth quarter and beat Winner 81-48 Saturday.

Katie Mathis had a double-double for Winner (0-2) with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Cassidy Hanson scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Winner was 18-of-57 from the field and 11-of-28 from the free throw line. The Warriors turned the ball over 31 times.

Winner plays today at home against Lyman.

PARKER — Parker pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 70-51 win over McCook Central/Montrose Saturday.

Parker had a 47-43 lead at the end of the third quarter, and outscored MCM 23-8 in the fourth quarter.

Kelly Binder scored 14 points for MCM (1-1) and Sierra Miles had 12 points and nine rebounds.

MCM was 19-of-52 from the field, 9-17 from the free throw line and had 20 turnovers.

McCook Central/Montrose plays today in Salem against Sioux Falls Christian.
