Man arrested for stealing hunter’s deer

The Davison County Sheriff ’s Office arrested a Mitchell man Monday in connection with a deer theft from Mount Vernon.

Bryan Buck, 26, is being charged with petty theft, criminal trespass and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, said Sheriff ’s Deputy Steve Brink.

All charges are misdemeanors.

Buck allegedly stole a five-by-five point buck deer last week from the back of Mount Vernon resident Kenny Hostler’s vehicle. Buck had been riding a four-wheeler along a nearby railroad track when he saw the buck, went onto Hostler’s land without permission and took the dead deer, Brink said.

“He saw it and thought it was the thing to do,” Brink added, stating Buck gave no real reason for taking the deer.

Brink said he doesn’t believe Buck had any preconceived notion of taking the deer, but simply saw the opportunity and took it.

In his 17 years as a sheriff ’s deputy, Brink has never dealt with a case of a stolen deer. Tips from the public and through Mitchell Area Crime Stoppers helped the Davison County Sheriff ’s Office and South Dakota Game Fish and Parks identify Buck as the person who took the deer.

“I really appreciate the help we got from the general public,” Brink said. “It made this case a lot simpler.”

Buck has bonded out of the Davison County Jail and is scheduled for a court date later this month.
