SIOUX FALLS - George McGovern was released today from a Sioux Falls hospital.
McGovern was admitted to Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center on Friday after falling and hitting his head outside Dakota Wesleyan University's McGovern Library in Mitchell, where he was scheduled to appear on a live broadcast of C-SPAN’s “The Contenders.”
“Senator McGovern’s condition continues to improve and we are pleased with his progress,” said Dr. Michael Elliott, chief medical officer at Avera McKennan. “But it’s very important that he continue to rest quietly until he has completely healed.”
McGovern's family wishes to extend its gratitude and appreciation for the many prayers and well wishes, an Avera news release said, and requests privacy at this time to focus on the his recovery. In lieu of sending flowers, the family requests that donations be made to www.feedingsouthdakota.org.
McGovern is a native and part-time resident of Mitchell. He served in the U.S. House and Senate and was the 1972 Democratic presidential nominee.
