Area basketball roundup: Ethan wins double OT thriller over Hanson

ALEXANDRIA — Ethan outscored Hanson by five points in the second overtime to pick up its first victory of the season Tuesday night.

ALEXANDRIA — Ethan outscored Hanson by five points in the second overtime to pick up its first victory of the season Tuesday night.

The Rustlers were led by Darbi Gustafson’s 25 points and 11 rebounds and they defeated the Beavers 55-50 in double overtime in girls’ high school basketball action.

Ethan’s Whitney Endres had 10 points and Shelly Tilberg had 11 rebounds.

Ethan was 21-of-49 from the field, 13-of-34 from the free-throw line and had 44 rebounds to Hanson’s 34.

The Beavers’ Ashley Robinson had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Cassidy Graham had 12 points.

Hanson had 35 turnovers, hit 17 of 64 shots from the field and 13 of 36 free throws.

Hanson (0-1) plays Bridgewater-Emery Thursday in Bridgewater, while Ethan (1-0) hosts Plankinton on Thursday.

Chamberlain 88, Mount Vernon 19

CHAMBERLAIN — Kennedy Wagner had 19 points and Jaymee Knippling had 11 rebounds to help Chamberlain beat Mount Vernon 88-19 Tuesday in both teams’ season-opener.

Frankie Willard had 13 points for Chamberlain, Abbey Handel had 11 points and Logan Pickner finished with seven rebounds.

Chamberlain shot 38-of-66 from the field for 57 percent and finished with 42 rebounds.

Mount Vernon’s Ashlee Dikoff had six points and the team was 9-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Chamberlain (1-0) plays Tuesday at Wessington Springs, while Mount Vernon (0-1) plays Thursday at Menno.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour 13

TRIPP — Raquel Sutera had 17 points and eight rebounds and Karlee Kozak had 11 points to lead Bon Homme past Tripp-Delmont/Armour 61-13 Tuesday night.

Bon Homme, which led 33-6 at halftime, was 25-of-61 from the field and had 13 turnovers to TDA’s 29.

TDA was led by Julie Mingo and Kelli Batterman, who each had four points. Batterman also added eight rebounds. TDA was 4-of-36 from the field and 3-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Bon Homme (1-0) plays Beresford on Friday, while TDA plays Kimball/White Lake Thursday in Armour.

Parkston 59, Freeman 48

FREEMAN — Parkston’s Marie Malloy opened the season with a 31-point performance in a 59-48 win over Freeman Tuesday night.

Malloy also had a team-high six rebounds, Erica Herrold had 15 points and Logan Wagner had 10 points.

Freeman’s Carly Uecker had 16 points, Dina Soulek had 13 and Paige Herrboldt had 11. Christa Roth had six rebounds to lead the Flyers, who shot 26 percent from the field and play at Irene-Wakonda next.

Parkston (1-0) plays at Tea Area on Friday.

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 63, Canistota 39

CANISTOTA — Oldham-Ramona/Rutland scored 20 first-quarter points en route to a 63-39 win over Canistota Tuesday.

ORR was led by BreeAnn Olsen’s 20 points and Taylor Strattion’s 19 points.

Canistota’s Haley Jerman had a team-high 15 points and seven rebounds and Jenny Hofer had 11. The Hawks shot 43 percent from the field and were 6-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Canistota (0-1) plays at Marion on Thursday.

Gregory 52, Andes Central 42

LAKE ANDES — Andes Central led after one quarter, but it was Gregory that got the win.

Gregory defeated Andes Central 52-42 Tuesday night in both teams’ season-opener.

Gregory’s Courtney Petersen had 11 points, Baili McCance had 10 points and Paxten Johnson had five rebounds.

Gregory shot 13-of-22 from the free-throw line.

For Andes Central, Kellie Winckler had a team-high 18 points. No other stats were reported for the Eagles.

Gregory (1-0) plays at Avon on Friday, while Andes Central (0-1) plays at Colome Thursday.

MARION — Marion’s Katherine Luke had 16 points and Devin Nelson had eight points, but McCook Central/Montrose came away with the 64-37 win Tuesday.

No individual stats were reported for McCook Central/Montrose.

Marion went 13-of-48 from the field, 7-of-13 from the free-throw line and had 11 turnovers.

McCook Central/Montrose hit 30-of-67 in the field, 8-of-10 from the free-throw line and had 16 turnovers.

Marion (0-1) plays Canistota at home Thursday, while McCook Central/Montrose (1-0) plays Parker Saturday in Parker.

COLOME— Dakota Christian’s Laurel Zomer had 12 points, Sammie De Lange had 10 points and Sara DeWaard has seven points in a 44-16 win over Colome Tuesday.

Dakota Christian went 8-of-13 from the field, 18-of-44 from the free-throw line and had 17 turnovers.

Colome shot 19 percent from the field, but no individual stats were reported.

Dakota Christian (1-0) plays Platte-Geddes Saturday at Platte, while Colome (0-1) hosts Andes Central on Thursday.

WINNER — Wagner’s Devon Brecke had 15 points and LaShawn Medicine Horn had 13 in a 66-42 win over Winner Tuesday.

Brecke added seven steals and six assists. Wagner shot 19-of-50 from the field and 25-of-58 from the free-throw line. The Red Raiders had 19 turnovers.

Winner’s Katie Mathis had 12 points and the team had 25 turnovers.

Wagner (1-0) hosts Lennox on Saturday and Winner (0-1) hosts Harrisburg on Saturday.

Viborg/Hurley’s Haley Jorgensen had 13 points and had 10 rebounds.

WHITE LAKE — The Kimball/White Lake girls’ basketball team claimed a 59-40 season-opening win over James Valley Christian Tuesday.

Maria Nightingale led KWL (1-0) with 25 points and nine rebounds, Kelcey Long added nine points and seven steals and Jill Jandreau scored eight points.

KWL had a total of 41 rebounds with just eight turnovers and hit 13-of-18 free throws.

Sarah Wedel scored 21 points for JVC (0-1) and Jaclyn Loban grabbed eight boards.

Kimball/White Lake plays Thursday in Armour against Tripp-Delmont/Armour.

BURKE — Whitney Hutchison had a double-double in South Central’s season-opening win over Lyman 57-48 Tuesday.

Hutchison scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for South Central (1-0). Ashley Green had 18 points and nine rebounds and Taylor PIstulka scored 13 points.

Lyman (0-1) was led by Bailey Almond, who scored 17 points. Chesney Garnos added 10 points and Anna Flitner grabbed nine rebounds.

South Central plays Tuesday in Springview, Neb., against North Central, and Lyman plays Saturday in Presho against Gettysburg.

TULARE — Sanborn Central/Woonsocket had four players score in double-figures in a season-opening 56-43 win over Hitchcock-Tulare Tuesday.

Rachel Selland led SCW (1-0) with 16 points, Shelby Selland scored 14 points and seven rebounds, Rachelle Moore score 13 points and Marissa Weber added 10 points.

SCW hit 23-of-50 shots and held Hitchcock-Tulare to 15-of-59 field goals.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket plays at 3 p.m. Saturday in Miller against Sunshine Bible Academy.

MILLER — The Miller girls’ basketball team defeated Gettysburg 63-42 in its season-opening game Tuesday.

Jansen Hunter scored 17 points for Miller, Alexis Watts scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Jamie Mentzer added points points. Tara Parmely had eight steals.

Miller forced Gettysburg to turn the ball over 26 times.

Miller plays at 6 p.m. Saturday in Eagle Butte against Cheyenne-Eagle Butte.
