No decision has been made regarding the proposed closure of the Huron and Rapid City area mail processing centers, according to Postal Service spokesman Peter Nowacki.

Nowacki said studies regarding the possible closure of the facilities are still ongoing, but no final actions will be taken until April at the earliest.

The postal service announced in September it is reviewing 252 of its mail processing centers for possible closure as part of $3 billion in cuts to avoid bankruptcy next year.

If consolidated, services at the Huron area mail processing center would be moved to a facility in Sioux Falls.

If the Postal Service does close the Huron and Rapid City area mail processing centers, officials have said it is likely that mail now delivered overnight would take two days or more days to be delivered, even if, for example, mail were sent between two addresses in Mitchell.
