MOUNT VERNON — A 41-year-old man was taken to a Mitchell hospital Sunday afternoon after he suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg.

Jason Hanson was reported in stable condition at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital Sunday night, according to a nursing supervisor.

Reports over a police scanner said Hanson was injured when he was shot with a .30-30 caliber rifle. That type of rifle is commonly used to hunt deer.

Hanson was taken to Westy’s One Stop in Mount Vernon where he was met by a Mitchell Public Safety ambulance at about 3:30 p.m.

A Westy’s employee said Hanson was with several children and a pack of hunting dogs. One of the children told her the wound was the result of a hunting accident.
