Matt Varilek released an online video today announcing his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to challenge Kristi Noem, R-S.D., for her U.S. House seat.

Varilek was born in Yankton. He holds a bachelor's degree from Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., and two master's degrees related to economics.

In the private sector, he spent four years as a market analyst at an energy commodities brokerage. For nearly seven years, he served as Sen. Tim Johnson's economic development director.

Varilek and his wife, Maggie, reside in Sioux Falls with their daughters, Willa and Mae. A statewide campaign kick-off tour is planned for early 2012.

"For some time now, we've been thinking hard about whether I should enter the race to serve as South Dakota’s next Congressman," Varilek says in the video. "Now with Congress about as popular as a toothache, you might wonder why anyone would want to join that institution.

"I want my little girls to grow up in a state with leaders they can be proud of. Leaders whose first priority is to serve middle-class and working people. Leaders who focus more on bringing people together than dividing them with harsh rhetoric while our problems just get bigger. So that's why I'm going to join this race."
