Former area man inducted into SD Aviation Hall of Fame

Col. Gary G. Nelson, Tampa, Fla., formerly of Ethan and Parkston, was inducted into the South Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame, Combat Air Crew Memorial section, during ceremonies on Aug. 27 at Black Hills Airport, Clyde Ice Field, Spearfish.
Nelson was born on April 6, 1940, in Ethan.
He graduated from South Dakota State College, Brookings, in 1962 and received his commission in the U.S. Air Force through ROTC in Brookings.
Col. Nelson’s service included flying F-4 Phantom II and F-16 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft from 1963 through 1987. He accumulated 4,500 hours in F-4s and 700 hours in F-16s.
