PIERRE (AP) — South Dakota has partnered with two nonprofit organizations to purchase 324 acres of land along the Big Sioux River that will make up a portion of the proposed Blood Run State Park.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced Wednesday that The Conservation Fund intends to purchase the forested land a few miles southeast of Sioux Falls from a private owner for $3.5 million before the end of the year. The nonprofit organization plans to hold the land until funds are available and then transfer it to South Dakota. The Games, Fish and Parks Commission and the board of directors of the Wildlife Foundation must still approve the purchase and agreement.
The property is part of the Blood Run National Historic Landmark, the largest known Native American site occupied by the Oneota culture.
