SPEARFISH (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service is planning to build an observation platform near Spearfish Canyon’s Bridal Veil Falls.
The Forest Service was recently awarded $160,000 from a federal highway grant.
Northern Hills District ranger Rhonda O’Byrne says those funds and $40,000 previously received from a resource advisory committee provide the necessary money to bring the project to completion.
The observation platform is being constructed primarily as a safety precaution. Currently, those who want to view the falls can park in a pull-off on the opposite side of the highway, but they have to cross and stand on the narrow shoulder while traffic passes close behind them.
O’Byrne says construction on the platform should begin by the fall of 2012.
