BOX ELDER (AP) — The Ellsworth Development Authority has approved a $1.1 million contract to build 12 houses on land it bought in eastern Box Elder.
The media reports that it's a step toward moving Box Elder residents out of Ellsworth Air Force Base flight-path danger zones.
Box Elder planning director Mike McMahon questions whether the project would help, considering its small size and a stipulation that the homes must be offered to anyone who meets income requirements, regardless of where they live.
Between 600 and 800 people live in mobile homes in an area incompatible with that type of housing due to noise and crash danger standards set by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Authority executive director Scott Landguth says this project won't solve the whole problem, but it's a start.
