Area firefighters are battling a fire about five miles northwest of Mount Vernon this morning.

Authorities were overheard on a police scanner saying that the person who called in the fire was "hysterical" and that firefighters could see "tons of smoke" from Betts Road as they hurried to the scene. A firefighter on his way to the fire said it "looks like it's going to be pretty big."

Initial reports called the blaze a "house fire," but later reports indicated the fire was limited to outbuildings and hay bales.

Firefighters from Mitchell, Plankinton and Letcher were headed to the scene.
