Area football roundup: Hanson stuns Viborg/Hurley in overtime

ALEXANDRIA — Reid Smith had 25 rushes for 149 yards in Hanson’s 22-21 overtime win against Viborg/Hurley Friday night.

ALEXANDRIA — Reid Smith had 25 rushes for 149 yards in Hanson’s 22-21 overtime win against Viborg/Hurley Friday night.

Defensively for Hanson, Alex Kayser had 12 tackles and Tyson Pietz had 10 tackles. Smith had nine tackles and one interception and Derek Kocer had seven tackles and one interception.

For Viborg/Hurley Trevor Jacobson was 13-of-22 for 159 yards passing. Dennis DeNeui had eight receptions for 107 yards and Ryne Kludt had six catches for 50 yards.

Defensively for the Cougars DeNeui had 15 tackles Matt Jensen had 12 tackles, and Jacobsen had one interception.

Hanson (5-3) does not play this week. Viborg/Hurley (5-2) hosts Irene-Wakonda Thursday.

CANISTOTA — Canistota had 161 total yards rushing in its 54-0 win over Marion Friday night. The game ended in the second quarter due to the mercy rule.

Alex Robertson led the Hawks in rushing with 50 yards, while Troy Hofer had 47. Nick Hofer had 30 yards rushing and Trevor Schroeder had 25 yards. Cody Bunger was 2-of-2 passing for the Hawks with 37 yards.

Defensively for Canistota, Isaac Fuhrman and Jacob Buseman each had four tackles while Zack Hofer, Eric Tieszen, Schroeder and Troy Hofer each had three tackles.

Marion was held to two first downs in the loss.

Canistota (7-0) travels to Freeman next Friday. Marion (1-7) does not play next week.

Also for Colome, Jake Hrabanek had five carries for 54 yards and Michael Rohde had six carries for 35 yards. Kinzer was 1-of-1 passing for 60 yards.

Defensively, Kinzer led the Cowboys with 10 tackles.

Colome (5-2) plays at White River next Friday. Kadoka Area (1-6) will host Philip Friday night.

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Mustangs had 260 total yards rushing in their win over the Freeman Flyers Friday night.

For the Mustangs, Kody Weiss had 188 yards on 19 carries, Cote Hinker had 47 yards on 11 carries and Deric Denning had 27 yards on 10 carries. Denning was 4-of-8 passing for 138 yards.

Defensively for the Mustangs, Cote Hinker and Shay Johnson had eight tackles and two sacks each. Brian Vermeulen had seven tackles and Jarod Long had three interceptions.

For the Flyers, Andrew Munkvold led with 40 yards on seven carries. Cole Paulson was 8-of-17 with 137 yards passing.

Mount Vernon (3-4) travels to Howard on Thursday. Freeman (1-6) will host Canistota on Thursday.

For Wolsey-Wessington (5-2), Ryne Johnson rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. Wolsey-Wessington rushed for 247 total yards.

FORESTBURG — The Corsica/Stickney football team scored the first 30 points of the game as the Jaguars beat Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central 44-14 Friday.

Adam Bormann ran for 198 yards and four touchdowns on 27 carries and passed for another touchdown for Corsica/Stickney (6-1), which is ranked fifth in Class 9A.

Gunner Baan Hofman ran for 80 yards and a touchdown on seven carries for the Jaguars and Myles Van Vuuren had 15 tackles and Ryan Hongslo had 13 tackles.

Gus Gran led WWSSC’s (5-3) with 61 yards on six carries and he passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Gran also had 12 tackles and Trevor Kenobbie added 10 tackles.

Corsica/Stickney plays Thursday in Stickney against Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan, and Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central has a bye week before the playoffs start.

For South Central (4-3), Turner Serr had 16 tackles and Traven Covey had 13 tackles as the Cougars were held to 96 total yards of offense.

Kimball/White Lake has next week off before the playoffs, and South Central plays Thursday in Lake Andes against Andes Central.

Jace Connor passed for 52 yards and three touchdowns for the Seahawks while Seth Wethor had 18 tackles, Huber had 17 tackles.

Landon Laible passed for 41 yards and a touchdown for Howard and Andrew Schwader had eight tackles, one sack and one blocked punt.
