A Waubay woman was sentenced Tuesday in Mitchell to two years in the state penitentiary for assault on a law enforcement officer while confined in jail.

In May 2010, Ashley Iron Star, 25, was being held in detox at the Davison County Jail and spit on Officer Aaron Nash.

A pre-sentence investigation indicated Iron Star had a troubled childhood, which led to her abuse of alcohol and drugs, said Philip Carlson, her attorney.

“She’s in a lot of trouble and I think she understands that finally,” Carlson said.

Judge Sean O’Brien sentenced her to two years in prison with 95 days credit for time served.
