HILL CITY (AP) — The nation's oldest official holiday honoring American Indians will be celebrated at Crazy Horse Memorial on Oct. 10.
The Native Americans' Day program will feature powwow champion dancer and Rosebud Sioux Tribe police chief Grace Her Many Horses. She is one of two female tribal police chiefs in South Dakota.
The South Dakota Legislature established the holiday in 1990 to honor the more than 70,000 Native Americans in the state.
The event will also include educational activities for kids, free buffalo stew lunch and a blast on the mountain carving if weather allows.
The event starts at 10 a.m. and is free with a donation of three cans of food per person.
