VERMILLION — Amanda Hegg and Courtney Wells each picked up three-set victories for the Mitchell High School girls’ tennis team Monday.

The two singles wins helped the Kernels to an 8-1 win over Vermillion.

Hegg beat Claire Jones 5-7, 6-3, 10-8, while Wells beat Val Robinson 6-2, 5-7, 10-8.

“Courtney Wells played the best I’ve seen her play all year at No. 2 singles,” Mitchell coach Pat Moller said.

Jones and Robinson came back and picked up Vermillion’s only victory at No. 1 doubles against Hegg and Kendra Cersosimo.

The Kernels were originally scheduled to host Brandon Valley today, but instead Mitchell will go to Brandon. Moller switched the site of the match so his team would get a look at the courts that are scheduled to host the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament.

The ESD conference tournament starts at 9 a.m. Friday in Brandon.
