SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Contributions to South Dakota's fund to defend abortion legislation have doubled thanks to one out-of-state donation.
According to media reports, Joseph and Cynthia Brinck of Ohio donated $25,000 to the Life Protection Subfund this summer. Previous year donations and interest brings the fund's total to $63,000.
The Legislature created the fund to cover legal expenses for a 2005 abortion measure and any other future abortion-related laws.
The state has battled for six years with Planned Parenthood over the 2005 state law. Planned Parenthood has also sued the state to stop a law passed this year requiring a woman seeking an abortion to wait 72 hours.
The South Dakota Attorney General's Office estimates that the legal challenge to this year's law could cost $1.75 million to $4.15 million.
