Mitchell Technical Institute enrollment numbers are down about 5 percent from last year’s figures, Director of Marketing Julie Brookbank said Tuesday.

The official student count is 1,054, which is 55 students less than last fall’s enrollment of 1,109.

Monday was MTI’s official count day.

Brookbank said an improving economy is partly to blame for the drop in numbers.

“Some of the feedback we were getting from students who had filled out their applications and their ‘intent to enroll’ forms was that they actually got jobs,” she said.

Brookbank wasn’t certain what budget implications the lower student numbers might have.

“At this point, we wanted to get the year off to a good start, and we feel we did that.”

Monday was the last day for students to drop or add classes, or to get refunds, she said.
