Mitchell girls swept by Sioux Falls Roosevelt

The Mitchell High School tennis team was swept by Sioux Falls Roosevelt Monday at Hitchcock Park.

Mitchell fell to 5-6 overall in the 9-0 defeat.

“Roosevelt is a very good team and an example of where we are trying to get to,” Mitchell coach Pat Moller said. “We aren’t there from what the score showed and that’s what we are working toward.”

Amanda Hegg and Kayla White battled to 6-4 and 6-3 defeats for Mitchell.

Abby Yahne played in the No. 3 singles for Kendra Cersosimo, who was named Mitchell’s homecoming queen Monday. Yahne lost in three sets, but Moller said she did the best she could.

“She took on a role that she isn’t used to,” he said. “I know she was nervous and going against some tough competition, and she did well I thought.”

Mitchell is 3-4 in the Eastern South Dakota Conference and plays in a triangular today in Yankton against Yankton and Sioux Falls Lincoln.

Moller said the team is going through a tough part in the schedule.

“It’s a good test to see where we are at and where we want to be,” he said. “I tell them they have to learn from every match and take something from every match so that we are prepares for the ESD meet and the state tournament.”
