Howard couple hurt in I-90 crash that killed Sioux Falls woman

A Howard couple received serious injuries Wednesday in a one-vehicle crash near Sioux Falls that killed a Sioux Falls woman.

A Howard couple received serious injuries Wednesday in a one-vehicle crash near Sioux Falls that killed a Sioux Falls woman.

Paul Douglas Hanten, 51, Howard, was driving a vehicle containing Brenda Sue Hanten, 53, Howard, and Angela Marie Shelafoe, 28, Sioux Falls, on Wednesday east on Interstate 90 at 11:20 a.m. near mile marker 389 west of Sioux Falls, when the vehicle left the roadway and entered the ditch, rolling on its top. Shelafoe was thrown from the vehicle and trapped under it. She died at the scene.

The Hantens both received serious but non-life threatening injuries and were transported to a Sioux Falls hospital. None of the occupants was wearing a seat belt.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and Hartford Fire Department assisted.
