Don Meyer to speak in Mitchell
By The Daily Republic
Former Northern State University men’s basketball coach Don Meyer will be at guest speaker at First Lutheran Church, Mitchell, at 7 p.m. Sept. 19.
The event is being put on by the Avera Parish Nurse Ministry at First Lutheran Church, the First United Methodist Church Health Cabinet and Avera Queen of Peace Hospital.
Meyer is known for having the most wins by a men’s basketball coach whose career included at least one stint with an NCAA member school. He completed his coaching career in 2010 at NSU in Aberdeen after previous head coaching positions at Hamline University and Lipscomb University.
He is a nationally-renowned inspirational speaker and was the recipient of the Jimmy V. Perseverance Award at the 2009 ESPY Awards, a yearly award show put on by ESPN.
Meyer was honored with the award because he had cancer discovered in his liver and intestines during emergency surgery after a car crash on Sept. 5, 2008, in which he lost one of his legs.
Tickets are $5 and are available by calling First Lutheran Church at 996-7706 or First United Methodist Church at 996-7721.
