Five killed in two-vehicle fatal crash Tuesday

RELIANCE — Five people died in a two-vehicle crash on a rural road nine miles northwest of Reliance on Tuesday afternoon.
Names of the victims are being withheld until family members have been notified.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, a northbound 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass carrying three people and a southbound 2001 Toyota Corolla carrying six people collided head-on at a hill crest. Both vehicles were engulfed in flame after the impact.
The driver and three passengers in the Toyota died at the scene. Two juveniles were thrown from the vehicle and transported to a Chamberlain hospital with serious injuries.
One passenger in the Oldsmobile died at the scene. The driver and one passenger were taken to a Chamberlain hospital. The driver suffered serious injuries. The passenger had minor injuries.
Lyman County Sheriff Steve Manger said the crash occurred on 327th Avenue, near 235th Street, nine miles northwest of Reliance. It’s a county gravel road, Manger said.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. The Lyman County Sheriff’s Office, Lower Brule Police, Reliance Fire Department and Missouri Valley Ambulance assisted.
