MURDO (AP) — An iconic billboard in western South Dakota that featured a big green car atop a bright yellow sign has been sent to the shop for an overhaul.
A June storm with wind gusts up to 80 mph snapped the 35-foot wood posts and brought the mock wood and fiberglass car to the ground off Interstate 90.
The car was an advertisement for the Pioneer Auto Show in Murdo. It was built when I-90 opened in 1972.
According to media reports, business owners plan to replace the sign with a more impressive version, at the cost of $100,000. It's expected to be completed in September.
The new sign will be supported by steel I-beams.
