Tuesday's sports briefs: Mad Dog players picked up for Class A tourney

Three players from the Mitchell Mad Dogs have been picked up to play in the Class A state amateur baseball tournament, which starts Friday in Pierre.

Three players from the Mitchell Mad Dogs have been picked up to play in the Class A state amateur baseball tournament, which starts Friday in Pierre.

Arin Boschee and Jason Skinner each were picked up by the Vermillion Red Sox, and Beau VanOverschelde was picked up by the Yankton Tappers.

The Class A state tournament starts in Pierre. First-round games run from Friday through Sunday.

The final six games are played in Mitchell, including the championship game, which starts at noon on Aug. 14.

Mitchell Mustangs finish season 52-1

SPEARFISH — The Mitchell Mustangs 12-and-under baseball team lost in the championship of the Northern Hills All-Star Tournament Sunday in Spearfish.

Mitchell went 4-1 in the tournament, losing 10-7 in extra innings to the Pierre Gladiators in the title game. Earlier in the tournament, the team beat the Pierre Sluggers 7-0, Lead-Deadwood 29-1, Spearfish 12-1 and Sturgis 7-0. The team finished its season at 52-1.

MHS lifters win Bench Bash event

Mitchell High School and the South Dakota National Guard hosted a Bench Bash weight lifting event Saturday at Joe Quintal Field.

Mitchell’s Brent Havlik, Jason Greenway, Micah Hettinger, Alex Herrick and Ashley Larson all earned honors at the event.

Havlik was named the outstanding lifter of the event after benching 290 pounds to win the 198-pound division. Greenway lifted 245 pounds to win the 181-pound division, Hettinger benched 230 pounds to win the 165-pound division and Herrick put up 135 pounds to top the 132-pound division.

Larson was the champion in the girls’ division.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Michael Reichelt benched 335 pounds to win the heavyweight division.

Other individual champions included MHS’ Robert McCardle and Tyler Larson and O’Gorman’s Jesse Rasanen.
