The Mitchell Aquatic Club has 37 swimmers qualified for at least one event at this weekend’s state swim meet, which runs today through Sunday at Frank Olsen Park in Sioux Falls.

And first-year MAC coach Kyle Margheim thinks a number of his swimmer have a chance to bring home a state title.

Thirteen-year-old Tevyn Waddell is qualified for seven individual events and two relays in the girls’ 13-and-14 year-old division. She will compete in the 800-meter freestyle, 1,500 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 400 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

“Tevyn has a great chance of winning all of her seven (individual) events” Margheim said. “I would say the distance freestyle events are her specialty. I’d think they’d be highlights for her this week.”

Waddell will team with Karlie Brown, Kristin Pistulka and Emmie Honermann in the 400 freestyle relay. The team has the top-ranked time entering the state meet.

Christian Fossum, another 13-year-old for the MAC, is going in seeded first in the 100 and 200 butterfly. He also will compete in the 800 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 400 medley, 1,500 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

“He has a shot to be first or second in all his events,” Margheim said of Fossum.

The 400 medley relay team of Gray Determan, Fossum, Zach Smith and Dushan Mirkovic is seeded second entering the meet.

Determan, another 13-year-old, will be a title contender in the 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyle events for the boys’ 13-14 division.

“My 13-year-olds are very strong this year,” Margheim said.

Zach Olson is seeded first in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events in the boys’ 15-16 division.

Ethan Huber should place highly in the 50 and 100 backstrokes and 50 and 100 butterfly events for the 9-10 boys’ division, Margheim said.

Cailey Scott has the opportunity to place in the top three of all nine of her events this week, Margheim said. She will swim in the 200 medley, 50 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay in the girls’ 9-10 division.
