WASHINGTON — Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Craig Fugate sent a letter to Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., announcing FEMA would extend the deadline for flood insurance policy-holders to file a “proof of loss” claim from 60 days to 120 days.
On July 12, Johnson, chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, sent a letter to Fugate requesting an extension to accommodate those families whose homes may remain under water for a long period of time, and who would therefore be unable to produce required information, such as repair estimates, in time to meet a 60-day deadline.
“This is welcome news for South Dakota flood insurance policyholders, and I thank administrator Fugate for his prompt response to my request,” Johnson stated in a press release.
“Flood victims already have enough to worry about, so I am glad they at least have the peace of mind in knowing they now have adequate time to file their claims,” he said.
