Fossum, Scott win multiple events for MAC

SIOUX FALLS — The Mitchell Aquatic Club had four swimmers win events at a meet over the weekend.
Christian Fossum won the boys’ 13- and 14-year-old division in the 100-meter butterfly and the 200 butterfly. Fossum posted the top times in the state in each event for his age division.
He also took third in the 400 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.
Cailey Scott won four events in the girls’ 9-10 division. Scott took first in the 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Her time in the 100 butterfly qualified her for the Central Zone Meet in Topeka, Kan.
The Central Zone Meet is a regional meet for swimmers 14-and-under from North Dakota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and South Dakota. The meet will be held Aug. 5-7.
Scott also took second in the 100 freestyle and 50 butterfly.
Ethan Huber won the 100 butterfly in the boys’ 9-10 division. His time in the event was the fastest in the state so far this summer in his age division.
He also took second in the 100 backstroke, 50 butterfly and 200 individual medley. Huber’s performance earned him the third-highest overall point total in his age division.
Mackenzie Miller won the 50 backstroke in the girls’ 9-10 division. She also was second in the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 50 breaststroke.
Gray Determan took second in the 400 freestyle in the boys’ 13-14 division. His time in the event was the fastest in the state in his division. He also was third in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke.
Tevyn Waddell took second in the 800 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle in the girls’ 13-14 division.
Karlie Brown was fifth in the 400 individual medley and 400 freestyle in the girls’ 13-14 division.
Twins hosting free youth clinic at Cadwell Park

The Minnesota Twins will be hosting a free youth baseball clinic Saturday at Cadwell Park.
The clinic will host players age 6-9 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Ages 10-16 will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
The Play Ball! Minnesota Youth Clinic’s staff is comprised of former players, coaches, scouts and teachers. Teams of 3-4 instructors travel to and administer each clinic.
Mitchell Parks & recreation Department coordinator Kevin DeVries said he was not informed which members of the clinic’s staff would be coming to Mitchell.
Here is a short bio of the staff members:
Dick Mingo: Charter member of Minnesota High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. Played baseball at Hamline University (Minn.) and played 20 years of semipro and amateur baseball.
Ken Mauer Sr.: Played baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers and basketball for the Denver Nuggets. Has coached for more than 40 years and is the uncle of Twins’ star Joe Mauer.
Julio Becquer: Former Twins first baseman.
Jay Brown: Played amateur baseball in Wisconsin and played collegiately for Minnesota State University-Mankato.
Don Geng: Head baseball coach at South St. Paul High School. Coached at Hamline University (Minn.) and played at St. Johns’ University (N.Y.).
Tom Sauer: Played baseball and football at St. Cloud State University (Minn.) before playing minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Steve Hucke: Head baseball coach at Rochester Community and Technical College (Minn.). Has coached for 24 years and played at Coe College (Iowa).
Kevin Nunn: Played minor league baseball for the San Francisco Giants after a collegiate career at Concordia College in Portland, Ore.
Brian Raabe: Played professionally for the Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies and the Seibu Lions of the Japanese Professional Baseball League. Earned All-American honors as a player at the University of Minnesota.
Pat Collins: Head baseball coach at Chisago Lakes High School (Minn.).
MV teeners down Lyman

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon 15- and 16-year-old teener baseball team defeated Lyman 12-6 Monday.
Charlie Mahaffey threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs, four walks and he struck out four.
Offensively for Mount Vernon, Mahaffey went 3-for-3, Cody Renken went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Justin Davis went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, Deric Denning was 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Joe Davis was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Lyman’s Dylan Severyn took the loss. He threw four innings and allowed 11 hits, eight earned runs, six walks and he struck out two.
Charlie Laroche was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Cade Johnson was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Ryder Schurtor was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Mount Vernon is 19-3 and plays Alexandria/Emery on Wednesday in Alexandria. The 13- and 14-year-old game starts at 5:30 p.m.
Wesleyan hosting second combine

The Dakota Wesleyan University football program will host its second annual high school combine Thursday at Joe Quintal Field.
Check-in is at 12:30 p.m. and the combine starts at 1 p.m. If you register prior to Thursday, the combine is $35 per participant. It will cost $40 Thursday.
Players will be tested in the 40-yard dash, the “L” drill, pro-agility, vertical jump and broad jump. Position drills will be run at the conclusion of the testing.
As of Monday, athletes from South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Wyoming and Arizona were signed up for the camp, which is for players who will be in high school as of fall 2011. The combine is open to the public.

Mingo, Walder, Wiebe honored

Former Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball players Brady Wiebe,
Mark Mingo and Chase Walder were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2010-11 Honors Court, it was announced Monday.
The honors court recognizes the talents of basketball players on the court and in the classroom.
Mingo, an Armour native, graduated with a degree in biochemistry. Walder, a Castlewood native, graduated from the school’s nursing program and Wiebe, a Madison native, graduated with a degree in business administration.
To qualify for the award, basketball players must maintain a GPA of 3.2 or higher, be a junior or senior and have played at their current school for at least one season.
Bormann wins Avera junior event

SIOUX FALLS — Parkston’s Sydney Bormann took first place in the girls’ 14- and 15-year-old division at a South Dakota Golf Association/Austad’s Junior Tour event Monday at Spring Creek Golf Course.
Bormann shot a 78 to win her age group by six shots.
Mitchell’s Kristin Sabers shot an 89 to take third in the girls 16-18 division. Parkston’s Jordan Bormann was sixth with a 94.
Parkston’s Sydney Weber shot a 101 to take second in the girls’ 12-13 division.
In the boys’ competition, Winner’s Jayden Bruun took second in the boys’ 14-15 division. He shot a 79.
Jaron Weich, who calls Lakeview Golf Course home, shot an 81 to tie for sixth in the same age group. Phoenix Sigmund, who also calls Lakeview home, shot an 80 to tie for 10th in the boys’ 16-18 division.
