Mitchell to host 2012 state amateur baseball tournament

Mitchell will be the host of the 2012 state amateur baseball tournament, it has been announced.

It will be the 80th anniversary of the state tournament and will be held at Cadwell Park. The Mitchell Baseball Association will host the event.

Jim Johnston, who is the tournament’s chairman when it is held in Mitchell, told The Daily Republic Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re going to make a big deal out of (the 80th anniversary) to celebrate amateur baseball in South Dakota,” he said.

Mitchell Baseball Association and Cadwell Park is also hosting this year’s tournament, which runs Aug. 3-14. This year is the 25th time the state amateur baseball tournament will be held at Cadwell Park.

The first state amateur baseball tournament held at Cadwell Park was in 1975. Cadwell Park was also the host of the 50th anniver-sary of the state amateur baseball tournament in 1982.

“We’ve made a lot of improvements to make it a better ballpark,” Johnston said. “It’s always out goal to have a state baseball tour-nament at Cadwell Park every year.”
